Teaching Philosophy

FLIEC's instructors adapt some of the most successful foreign-language teaching techniques used at universities to K-12 classes, after school programs and one-on-one adult lessons. They are up to date with current research and follow the guidelines of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in order to provide the most engaging, age-appropriate foreign language learning experience. Here is our teaching philosophy:

FLIEC instructors take time to learn about their students so as to meet their learning needs;
FLIEC provides immersion-style teaching, which means that during classes instructors speak 90% of the time or more in the language they teach;
FLIEC teaches students to become not only proficient in the language but in the culture as well;
FLIEC's aim is to foster in students a life-long engagement with the languages and cultures it teaches.

Dr. Patricia Schiaffini

FLIEC´s founder, Dr. Patricia Schiaffini, has over twenty years of experience teaching Chinese and Spanish at college level. She has trained many foreign-language and ESL teachers sharing with them the most current and successful foreign-language teaching techniques, as well as classroom management practices.
